Helene and Aurelia oversee the project, contribute to its diverse outcomes and support national coordinators and working groups. They operate from Belgium.
After her studies in criminology (KU Leuven/Université de Montréal), Helene became a prison researcher at the Leuven Institute of Criminology. Her research focuses on the normalization of living conditions in Belgian and Norwegian prisons. By spending a great deal of time in these prisons, not only her academic interest grew, but also her motivation to change the prison system. That is why she joined De Huizen in 2016.
Aurelia Bijnens is education coordinator in the prison of Ypres and Ruiselede. She holds a Master’s degree of Criminology (Ghent University, 2016) and during her studies she did an internship at the prison of Ghent. During this internship she conducted her first mini-research focusing on the reintegration of prisoners. Afterwards, she continued to pursue her research interests in penal policies and imprisonment which resulted in a job as a researcher at the Institute of International Research on Criminal Policy (IRCP) (October 2016- March 2019). In 2020 she joined RESCALED.
